Our vision
We launched our Green School Activity believing that schools can considerably reduce their negative impact on the environment only if each member of the school community reflects on and change their behaviors in energy and water usage, waste production and management and transportation habits. We also believe that the students themselves should be the carrier of this change, learning and practicing active citizenship and care for the environment in the school. We also believe that our Green Schools will become an inspiring model for the community to care for the environment through all the small things we do in our every day life.
In our Green School Program, we promote environmental-friendly behaviors and lifestyles among the students, the school staff and the wider community, we support schools’ environmental actions in the school and in the school communities, and we work to reduce schools’ negative impact on the environment.
Our program is based on the ISO 14 000 standard for environmental management, adjusted to be used by the students in the schools.
In achieving our vision, we are supporting the schools with the following activities:
- We train teachers to establish Green Clubs in the schools, to jointly design an annual educational program for the students in the clubs, and to implement the programme together with their colleagues and the students.
- We develop a manual for the teachers and the students, to guide them through the work on the environmental issues of the schools.
- We equip the Green Clubs with equipment necessary to implement the programme: green uniforms for the students, green bikes for their environmental patrols, energy measuring devices for monitoring energy usage, and cameras for recording the environmental issues.
- We support schools’ environmental projects and awareness raising campaigns with grants of up to 1500 US dollars per school.
- We organize a competition event, at which the Green Clubs students will have the opportunity to show what they have learnt about the impact of their school on the environment, and what they have done to reduce it.
Green clubs
Our Green Clubs are they main carrier of the schools’ change. They are formed in each of the participating schools and are composed of an average of 20 students from 6th through 7th grade. They meet regularly on weekly bases, under a coordination of their Green Club teacher, to learn about and to act upon four environmental themes relevant for the school community, namely: energy, water, waste and transportation. The students in the Green Clubs are split in four working groups, and each of the groups is assigned to work on one of the fourth environmental themes.
The aim of the work of the Green Clubs is as following:
- To reduce energy usage in the school,
- To reduce water usage in the school,
- To reduce the waste produced by the school, and
- To promote environmental friendly means of transportation.
In order to achieve their goals, within the work of the Green Club, the students are applying the Plan-Do-Check-Act methodology, which is the base of the ISO 14000 standard for environmental management.
The students assess the energy and water usage in the school, the waste production and the transportation habits of their fellow students and school stuff. After the assessment is done, they analyze the collected data, identifying issues to be address and designing actions for improvement. Their projects incorporate activities like small infrastructural interventions, educational classes for all the students in the school, school level campaigns for raising the awareness of the students on the identified issues, public events for promotion of their efforts and raising support of the community for the school, suggestions for the school administration on how to reduce the negative impact of the school on the environment, etc. During the implementation of their projects, the Green Patrols of the clubs are monitoring the progress of the project implementation, as well as the impact on the school community. The process ends with an evaluation of the activities’ impact on the school community, as a base for a new cycle of planning, action, monitoring and evaluation.
All the work of the Green Club is guided by and documented within the Green School manual. The manual is designed by the project staff and the teachers participating in the program. It incorporates data collection sheets as well as forms with questions and examples that guide the student through the whole process of data analyzes, project design, monitoring and evaluation. It is made to be used throughout one school year no a weekly bases, and presents a comprehensive annual program for the work of the Green Clubs. |
